Healthy eating on business trips
A healthy diet plays an important role for more and more people these days. In everyday life and at home, they therefore pay attention to the organic label, the origin of the meat or cook ahead to get through the day in a healthy way. On business trips, however, it is often not possible to meet all these requirements. On the one hand, you are dependent on what the hotel offers and, on the other, it is all the more difficult to find a suitable restaurant in a foreign city.
So that you are better prepared for your next business trip, we have put together a few tips for you on how you don’t have to go without a healthy diet when you are on the move.
How do I get through the day?
Every business traveler should have exactly two things with them before departure: Enough water and a few snacks. In addition to a bottle of water, it is advisable to carry fruit such as apples and bananas, as well as muesli bars. This saves you from having to take sweetened soft drinks and the one or other craving that often tempts you to grab a slice of pizza or order a burger at train stations. These are the two biggest health pitfalls: Too much sugar and too much fat. On the other hand, there is hardly any nutritional value. Although the body is full, it has not gained any energy from the food intake to get through the day.
So the first rule is: preparation is everything.
Meal prep is not just for athletes
Athletes are familiar with meal prep, the preparation of meals in storage containers. As they are dependent on protein-rich food, but cannot get it anywhere else, they always have their food with them. And that sounds more complicated than it actually is, because it’s all a question of habit. So why not adapt this habit for business trips? So that you are not dependent on the high-calorie buffet, where there is often no choice apart from sandwiches and cakes. Vegetarians and vegans in particular will benefit from this preparation in the long term, as they often have to either go hungry or gnaw on an apple they have brought with them.
Eating out
Of course, you can’t always eat out of your laptop bag, especially on business trips, as a meeting is often followed by a business dinner in the evening. If you have a say in the matter, it is advisable to refer to Indian and Thai restaurants. Experience has shown that the chances of getting healthy, steam-cooked vegetables are greatest here. Especially in English-speaking countries, many business travelers turn to these restaurants when they want a healthier option than a hotel. However, vegans traveling to Bavaria are more likely to have difficulty finding vegetarian or even vegan dishes on the menus outside their own kitchen. In this case, self-catering is almost the only way to get through the day according to your habits.
And speaking of habits: You should stick to them, especially when it comes to eating at the time of day that your body knows. Maintaining a rhythm is the be-all and end-all when traveling on business.
